Hi,

We bought an old bungalow with 2 bedrooms built under the roof. Each have 4 kind of loft access "doors" made of plywood which I would like to replace by something proper.
I would like something made on purpose that looks nice and solid, airtight and with hinges.

I saw this at Jewson:
http://www.jewson.co.uk/tools-fixin...69900/fakro-dwk-l-shaped-loft-door-55-x-80cm/
Only one picture on their website, looks good to me but there is no price mentionned.
Could I get this type of door anywhere else?

I found also a Manthorpe drop down loft access. Is it something that we could maybe install horizontally, surely it would work the same as a door?

What else could I get?

Thanks.

Hi Letty
I work in the window and door industry, though in the hardware industry (window motors, hinges, locks etc).
A loft hatch like this may well not work well as a vertical eaves hatch such as the Fakro one you found, because the hardware (hinges, latch etc) MIGHT not be suitable for the loads that a door will exert, even a small door such as an eaves hatch. The loads are in a different direction.

In your position, if I couldn't find a ready made door for the eaves of the correct height, I'd buy a standard flat door and cut it down. This will leave a hollow space where you make the cut (these flat doors are hollow, filled with insulating corrugated cardboard usually, which also makes the door more rigid). A piece of timber can be cut to size and slid into this gap and glued and pinned into place. A little filler, sanding and then paint and jobs a good'un.

One of these would be ideal and you may even get two out of one of these http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Lisburn-Internal-Ply-Veneer-Door-Flushed-1-Panel-1981x762mm/p/205842

Good luck.

Thanks for the idea Nick but I would like to avoid diy doors as they don't age well, everything gets loose with time, after a few openings the screws don't stay in place ..., nasty and my husband is not good at building things.

You know the reason things fall apart is your hubby right? Maybe upgrade him at the same time? :)

I cannot for the life of me understand why you are proposing to use loft access doors in this situation though.

It is extremely unlikely that you will be able to buy ready made doors to fit the apertures the ply ones sit in. If you really want ready made doors then the framing that holds up the wall plasterwork will have to be modified to hold in the new door frame. Either see a builder or a carpenter to do the job or refurbish the existing doors.
Inside the storage areas, the sloping ceiling/roof should be insulated as well as your skeilings. If not then the floor of the storage voids and the back of the walls (and your doors) will need to be insulated, though this makes the storage areas at outside temperature.

Hmm, I am still not sure about what to do but thank you all for your ideas and comments.
