Hi All,

I need to relocate my loft hatch. This will involve cutting one of the ceiling joists. I understand that i will need to double up on the trimmers. Is it ok to do this with the roof that i have:

The roof has 2 larger joists in a cross formation accross the loft which go above the ceiling joists:

I am wanting to cut the following joist - this is not one of the larger roofing joists but next one up is - which is where the loft hatch will be attached to:

Does that sound ok - or could it cause problems?

Thanks

You should not have any problems cutting one ceiling joist out. I would screw a piece of 3x2" either side of the opening you intend to cut out before you start to keep things stable until you have your new frame work done.

Thanks for that.

What nails would you use to nail the trimmers onto the joists?
