Hi there

I want to put some boards down in my loft so that we can use it as storage. First of all, I don't know whether to have insulation in the joists below the boards or whether to fill in between the joists actually on the roof. It's just a mass of insulation up there at the moment. I'd like to keep my options open and would welcome any advice. However, if going for the option of filling between the roof joists, do you advise rolling insulation between them and then boarding over it or using the rigid polystyrene type stuff with a metallic outer? I'd like to make it as usable as I can up there.

Thanks for looking.

I've just been up there actually and noticed that the joists/rafters (I'm not sure of the technical term) are metal. See picture. Not sure how I'll attach loft boards to those!

Usually these provide sufficient height for insulation. The only way to board this loft would be to build a timber subframe into the metal joists first and then install the boards onto the subframe afterwards.
