loft light off last downlight control

I have installed a loft light off my last downlight but this will always be on when the landing lights are on which is a bit of a pain.

Can I add a switch between the last downlight and loft light?

Yes, but that would mean you need the landing lights on AND the new switch on for the loft light to work.

Far better to add the new loft light switch and connect it to a permanent source of power rather than from an existing switched light.

Didn't realise you was in Poole @flameport /John I'm in Ringwood area, I've found many a video you've done scratching my head and also used so many of your guides online so thank you.

@SUNRAY not sure why the light would be left on for months on end as I'd know the landing lights were on (which is only mostly in winter)

But it is a very common arrangement to prevent it being left on for months on end.

On of our local minor developers do that as standard.

Wire it to a L and N, so it is always available, but install the switch just below the ceiling, alongside the loft ladder. That way, you can check it is off, with the loft hatch closed, switch on as you go up the ladder, off on the way down - and don't have to have the landing light on.

I'll only be using it a few times a year, I've already laid the cables so will check where the nearest PL is tomorrow and go from there.

Might just have the arrangement where I need to have landing on and switch to have it on when I'm up there.

It is a common arrangement to to add an additional switch for the loft to to an existing light, that way the loft can't be accidentally left on for too long and certainly not without having the landing lights on.

I added an indicator light in the ceiling near the hatch for a friend as their son used the loft for his dark room and regularly left the light on which often included his heated developing trays and print driers etc. OK a slightly off the wall situation but one where it did stop it being left on by accident.

I misunderstood your reply, doing what you have done and the proposed additional switch will stop them being left on by accident which otherwise does happen when the only switch for the loft light is in the loft
