Loft on bungelow - removal of rafters?

We have a twenties bungelow, that approx 20 years ago had a single story side extension.

The existing hip roof was left pretty much as was, and the extended roof grafted onto the side.

Having pulled out the back of a cupboard on the old loft room - we have gained access to effectivley this new loft area that had previously been sealed off.

What we would like to do is add an access hatch/door for this area, such that it can be used for light storage - trouble is, the original rafters (now inside the structure) are restricting access. (see pics below)

Question is twofold:

1) could a single rafter be removed without compromising the structure?
2) for all of the old hip end rafters to be removed, (to max out the loft space available) clearly some significant additional support would be needed - i.e. could the underpurlin be part removed if propped either side?

Its a shallow pitch, so as much of this old internal roof that can come out as possible would be ideal

I'm going to have a structural engineer to do some cals - but want to get a sense of the art of the possible before setting about it in earnest

The below pics from when the tiles were off show the intesection of old roof and new

and the other couple of shots are from the newer loftspace looking back at the old loftroom, and vice versa

Any advice most grateful
