Loft- plasterboard

im in the process of converting my loft into a useful storage area. we have used 2x1 to raise the height of the joists due to wires and laid the floor. we have a large loft but only plan to plasterboard the (don't know the correct term) upside down v shape which runs across our flat. we intend to get a light put in but no other work, basically a nice storage space. im concerned the plastered boards which are 9mm thick may be too heavy though. can anyone advise if we do plaster the beams if it is ok to do so.

well, we want to make it look like a nice area.. to appeal to buyers.

If you are planning to sell and the rafters are boarded, it may well just get thrown up on a survey as an non compliant conversion and will possibly hinder a sale rather than enhance it. Buyers do not expect lofts to be boarded for aesthetics.

Funny how you follow us round though geraint, you're advice must be sound if it contradicts everyone elses!

Lofts should be well ventilated but can still suffer from condensation, especially with modern insulation. This probably makes ordinary plasterboard unsuitable. I recently thought of putting up Celotex on the centre section of a trussed roof to make a dry storage area. It is light enough to be put up with glue and should retain enough heat to keep the storage area dry. I'd want to put a horizontal ceiling across the top just to keep the apex open for loft ventilation. Include a vent to the rest of the loft to allow moisture to escape.

I would run a mile from a house with a half-arsed loft conversion. You're almost certainly going to trap damp and cause rot or condensation to no measurable benefit.

Board out the floor, put some decent lights up - that's as far as you want to go without doing a proper job.
