We have had a logburner and flexible flue installed for several months. We have had many fires in the burner to temper the iron and make sure its all good for the coming winter. The past 2 times we have used it there has been a "hot tar" smell in the loft and bedroom that shares the chimney. The house was built in 1880 and has always had an open fire. We opted for a burner as its more efficient and the mortar is old so also for safety reasons.
Ive been in the loft and checked everything and there is nothing that seems out of place. There is no smoke just the smell.
I was wondering if it could be tar deposits left from the old open fire that is now getting warm near the liner and perhaps moving and getting on the liner itself causing the smell. The smoke emitted from the chimney at the flue opening smells of burning wood and not tar.
