Lost my personal file on Outlook express

...by deleting it accidentally

I pressed the mouse buttons too quick, and then went on to delete it from the deleted items section!!

I tried a system back up boot from a few days prior but its still lost.

Anyone help at all?

The data is still there, just not indexed. The trouble is, the more you use the disk, the more likely that something will overwrite the "free space" that the data occupies.

There are programs that will recover from situations like this, but again, you will have to install it and risk overwriting the data. May be worth a go though. Here's one that might be worth a punt, although i've not tried it. I use OnTrack products for this kind of stuff, but they are a tad pricey.

You may find you there are data recovery tools available for free on Linux distributions which will boot from a CD. Some examples are Knoppix or Damn Small Linux. I'm sure if you Google for "data recovery windows Knoppix" e.t.c. you may find something. I am not sure what your like with Linux but it maybe an option.

Another alternative maybe considering using PC worlds new data recovery service:

I haven't used the service but and I guess it depends on what the data is worth to you. The important point is the more you use the PC the less chance there is of recovering the data.

Personal file in OE??
But do you know just what the file was named ...? Did you mean the address book (anyname.WAB) or email folder (FolderName.DBX)?

For each OE folder there should exist a 'SomeSortaName'.dbx file. Search *.dbx in your windows folder...
Location folder should be similar - not identical - to this:-
C:\Documents and Settings\TonyB\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{4906E791-68E0-4690-A37F-F87B0F4AFF7A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

You can recover deleted file using data recovery software available. I would suggest you to use "Kernel for FAT and NTFS".
