Need some help please.

Have been asked to wire 3 x 50W, 230V luminaires that have been pre-fitted in a kitchen ceiling by the customers builder. There are no fitting instructions and the only markings I can see are the minimum distance (9th down on LHS of table 55.2) and 'for use with self shielded tungsten halogen lamps only' (3rd down on RHS of table 55.2). The kitchen ceiling is artexed chipboard. Are these fittings suitable in such a ceiling or should I walk and advise the customer that he needs to obtain luminaires that either have the 1st, 2nd or 4th on LHS of Table 55.2 ?

Thanks

Thrip

I try and convince people that 50W spot lights are as the name suggests for sending a spot of light onto a picture or something like that. Having remove far too many with signs of burning I try to avoid fitting them.

Normally when you point out the fire risk and say how it can take years before they have dried the wood enough then it busts into flames most people see that they are better using sensible lighting units and thank you for being honest.

I would tell them you will not fit them. You can say if they really want them you will fit correct type but advise they fit non tungsten lights to avoid the room looking like a planetarium and still not being able to see what they are doing would be far better. Something like 2D units.

No, since chipboard is a flammable substance.

Chipboard is totally unsuitable as a kitchen ceiling anyway - imagine what would happen if there was a fire in the kitchen.

Ceilings are usually only good to ****** fire for 30 minutes or so. I do not know if you have ever tried to set light to chipboard but it doesn't (light).
Much as I do not like downlights, I do not see an issue, providing the fitings are F-Marked (that is suitable for flammable surfaces).

I hope Thripster has some other lights in the kitchen (ie lighting up the work areas). Or invest in some head torches....
