Macbook virus protection

Fairly recently I acquired a macbook. I've been using a window's xp pc, with AVG virus protection. Is virus protection required for mac or not (I seem to remember reading somewhere they were more secure & did not need it.
Also it has an annoying habit of auto correcting words it does not recognise when I am typing, is it possible to switch this feature off? Thanks

Hi,

That you don't need malware protection and Macs can't get infected are common misconceptions. It is true that less malware is targeted at Macs but this is only because windows is a more popular OS.
