My washing machine fills up whenever it is finished a wash. It takes about 7 hours for the drum to fill up completely.

Since it started doing this a few months ago I simply started shutting of the hot and cold inlet pipes as soon as a wash ended, and opening them up again whenever I needed to do another one. Unfortunately I forgot to shut them off last night and my downstairs neighbour awoke me at 7am to tell me he was getting water through his ceiling.

So now I want to get it fixed properly. I'm guessing it's some sort of valve that is leaking but any help would be gratefully received!!

Your cold water inlet valve is probably the culprit. The fault being it is not fully closing usually due to bit grit in the valve. therefore drum filling then overflowing. Replacement valve reasonably cheap and not a long job to fit.

Will have a look at taking out the valve and replacing if necessary. Had a look at the front of the machine this morning to find out what model it is..... but it's not immediately clear.

Tockworth is probibly right, but thought I would add that it may be low water pressure. The valves use water pressure to stay closed (normall need 1 bar) If you have less than the required pressure the valve leak slowly.

I'm sure I replied to this earlier today, just to say that in my experience it is the hot valve that gets blocked by limescale. I usually (about once a year) just give it a rinse under the tap and leave some limescale remover in it for about an hour. Always fixes the problem although I only ever had enough drips to fill the drum in about a week.

Obviously it would be more sensible to replace the valve.
