I had reason to remove my kitchen worktops and a couple of base units this weekend and since it provided easy access to the otherwise difficult to reach magnaclean pro I decided to remove it and give it a good clean. I was surprised to find no sludge at all but when I tested the magnetism with various ferrous items it has no magnetism at all which has baffled me. I'm wondering if it could have been defective from installation about 10 years ago. Is anyone able to shed any light on this?

The latest on this is that I purchased a new magnaclean pro 1 as a direct swap for the defective no longer magnetic one. Having fitted it, bled it and topped the pressure up to 1.5 bar the boiler is unsurpringly showing low pressure error code but rotating anticlockwise and holding the dial on 'reset' for 5 seconds isn't firing the boiler up. It's a Promax Plus. Any suggestions please.

Doesn't help much, but I fitted mine over 12 years ago and it was still magnetic when I cleaned it 1 month back.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I'm of the view that it must never have been magnetic from manufacture and given that it's been inaccessibly fitted for 10+ years it'll be interesting to see what the new one removes which is super magnetic. I've managed to get the boiler firing up now so I'll run it for a week and then remove the magnet and clean it before adding the Fernox.
BTW for future reference to anyone who may have problems with leaking valve fittings after refitting a Magnaclean, I had to retain the original red valves and on the upper MC joint it kept leaking from the back of the nut which attaches to the MC. I reattempted the joint so many times with different O rings, silicon lube etc but every time I opened the valve it immediately started leaking. Transpired after much observation that the body of the valve is threaded in place and it had worked itself loose. Look inside the valve and it has the appearance of a hex fitting but with 8 facets instead of 6. Without the help of an 8 faceted specialist socket I bought a piece of 15mm x 80mm flat steel strap from b&q for £1.89 which slotted tightly into the valve guts and was able to then tighten that thread up with pliers. Easy fix and no more leak and a big relief.
