Hello Guys,

Got a quick question. Recently my brother went through a 2.5" 415V 3 Phase (thats what the jointer said) with a Hilti Hammer. The Cable was buried about 6" below the surface of my mums lawn/patio. The electrical company have done an emergency repair and have now come to bury the cable deeper. It has been over a month now since they have dug up the entire length of the cable that goes straight through my mums house from the back wall, down the side of the house and under the front wall and it has been left open. I am not particularly happy with this situation as my 18 month daughter loves to play in the garden but cannot due to this situation. Now for the questions:

1. How far down should this cable be (~600mm??)?
2. Should the cable be there in the first place (through a domestic property) ?
3. Could we insist on the cable being removed?
4. My Mum has thought about building an extension on the side of the house, as it stands this would cover the cable, what we have to do to sort this?

THanks In Advance Guys
Jamie

I hope your brother was not injured.

Is the house freehold? - if it is, you may have the right to receive an annual fee from the electricity company in the form of a wayleave payment.

The cable should really be buried deeper around 600-750 mm is typical, with marker tiles above the run as a minimum.

My brother, who lives in Eastern's area had a cable running through his property to a distribution pole in his garden.

He wanted to build an extension which would be over the cable. Eastern Electricity (as it was then) told him it would cost £££ for them to divert the cable. So he told them to remove the cable from his land. After 6 months they did so, no cost to him of course.
