Mains supply smoke alarms or battery?

Hi all,
After having a new extention built,my son wants to know whether you have to have smoke alarms connected to the mains supply under new regulations,or whether battery ones are still permitted.Thanks.

I believe, having a mate who have just had an extention built, smoke alarms are to be wired to the mains as per Building Regs

Not sure on the regs but mains with battery back up is the best bet.

no idea with building regs on this one, but all i have seen are mains with internal battery back up
