mains water pump?

The salamander home boost will deliver 12 litres per minute and boost pressure they are quite noisy, 12 litres is the maximum allowed .
If you have room there are various bigger versions that require tanks etc .

Don't those pumps "suck" (I know they actually don't) - and wouldn't it "suck" water from the other house rather than the main a quarter of a mile away?

Therein lies the issue, the risk of drawing water back into the supply, if the other property doesn't have the required Backflow prevention. Anything from a shower head being left in a bath full of water, to a hosepipe filling a garden pond or paddling pool, should a negative pressure be introduced into the pipework, contaminated water could be drawn back into the (your) supply.

To update. The other house has an external tap on the same extension as mine, which when on reduces mine to very poor flow.
A Salamander home boost pump may not work due to the poor flow rate, needs to be a minimum of 3l/min to work.
Indications from bore hole drillers state the depth needed is minimum to 50m due to limestone near the surface. So expensive.
Favourite is a water tank, 5000litres to act as a reservoir with pump, flow switch, UV cleansing system and an insulated shed around it.
