mains water pump?

The salamander home boost will deliver 12 litres per minute and boost pressure they are quite noisy, 12 litres is the maximum allowed .
If you have room there are various bigger versions that require tanks etc .

Don't those pumps "suck" (I know they actually don't) - and wouldn't it "suck" water from the other house rather than the main a quarter of a mile away?

Therein lies the issue, the risk of drawing water back into the supply, if the other property doesn't have the required Backflow prevention. Anything from a shower head being left in a bath full of water, to a hosepipe filling a garden pond or paddling pool, should a negative pressure be introduced into the pipework, contaminated water could be drawn back into the (your) supply.
