Managed to screw it right up!

Did you also change any lights in the other rooms before doing this room

Just had another look at your wiring. One plain brown conductor and one brown with tape appear to go on the inside of the tape that is round the block.

The other conductor without tape seems to go outside the tape and does not appear to enter the block.

Could you have tripped an RCD somewhere? (Sometimes with the circuit isolated, an RCD can still trip, if you have one).

Wouldn't he then be reporting all the lights on that circuit out, not just the one on the next room?

I looked at that, felt the same, decided it couldn't possibly have been done like that and it must be a trick of the light.

Do you have 2 switches controlling this bulb or is it a single switch?

Don't be stupid, what has that go to do with anything?
It has everything to do with it.

At least he can then isolate the wires from the switches and see what he has left so he knows if it is only one feed coming to the connection or if it then goes out to the other room from the same box!

It is called ' Troubleshooting ' !

Looking at the photo you have got, the one with your choc blocks,

The one with 2 brown cables is the one that comes from your light switch. You can remove that one from the choc block and isolate that separately for now.

Then you have the 2 TE cables coming in. Make sure both browns are tied together, and the 2 blues and the 2 earths. This is only until you get your new light fitting.

If you still don't have light next room, then you must have either disturbed something else or fuse tripped?

If you still don't get light working, take the cover off the other light and check for voltage at the connection. You should have mains going in at the loop connectors.

Are you sure you don't have a double switch that has been disturbed ?

Attached image shows you what the cables are in the connection.

Hope this helps.
