Mars.

I have a little gas stove in the van, and would take some water with me, and some tea bags

I quite like the idea of hurtling through space in my little white van, visiting distant comets and having a cuppa on them - could have a tick list, comets I have had cups of tea on
You should consider a highly rewarding career such as a street furniture spark like me, I am regularly in space eating a pot noodle in my basket

Hmm.. so we landed on the moon... in 1963, I don't see any of the relevant infrastructure so far! not even a pub or a chippy

You've evidently not been keeping up with recent developments on the moon. The following is a REAL image, verified by NASA. The chippy's on Just Eat however the estimated delivery time is quite excessive.

Mine the moon/mars and people will live there.
There are places on Earth, such as the Sahara desert, that have greater quantities of water and minerals than is present on the moon, yet remain largely barren. Commercially speaking, mining either planet is a dead as the brainpower of the DIYnot RWR combined.

Agreed, we'd need an economic product that requires the moon or Mars for it to make sense.

The classic example is HE3 for clean fusion reactions.

I got you sussed, you would volunteer to live on Mars alone, just so you can claim to be the best looking man on the planet and there be some truth about it :) :)
I never thought of it that way, although even if it were jam packed that would still be the truth. I remember when I was 5 and taken to Butlins on holiday, I won a whole host of trophys, from being the best looking child to being the smartest dressed. It sort of just continued through my life.

I don't know much about fusion, so have had a quick look.

That way seems to produce an alpha particle and a proton. Why is that cleaner than normal fusion.

only if hydrogen and oxygen existed plus a source of energy (we would need sunlight) - an easy supply of hydrogen could be tricky - i think oxygen is quite widespread
there is quite a lot methane about.

A lot less radioactive waste and Helium as the main byproduct
