Hi,

The wiring in our house was done by BT back in the days, around the 1990's. They had installed one socket in the upstairs front room and a extension in the front room downstairs. There was a extra third one which BT installed in the living room.

Now, coming forward to just two years ago. A BT engineer was working on the telephone pole and he must have forgotten to reconnect the wires, well something happened and it knocked our telephone line out.

Well, BT engineer came around, check everything, found the fault on the Pole and reconnected the wires.

He noticed that we didn't have a BT Master Socket, so he replaced the socket in the upstairs front room with a master socket.

Well, around two weeks ago, I was experiencing problems with my broadband speeds, was getting nothing, around 160kbps.

Well, BT engineer came around today, found a fault with the wiring from the master socket to the black connector which connects to the main wire to the telephone pole. Well he changed that wire and he also done some wire changing from the BT junction box to the bottom of the pole.

After all of that, I was receiving around 7MB, which was great.

BUT for some reason, when he connected the internal wiring back in, the speed dropped. He said it was probably because of the other wire which goes from the master socket, down the outside wall and back into the downstairs front room. (this was the socket which BT installed yonks ago)

(before the this speed problems, I was getting a cool 6MB on my internal wiring with no problems)

He said to replace that wire as its probably damaged and moving it around will have caused it more damage. I asked him, isn't BT responsible for what they install? He said no, its only upto the Master Socket.

Is he right? Is it upto the Master Socket and thats it. Even if BT have installed the other two extensions???

Yes , he is correct..openreach only cover the line up to the master socket NTE5 as its called and anything after that belongs to you ,as you say BT may have installed the extensions whenever but they only carry a 12 month warranty so unless they have been done it the last 12 months its your problem

But not a big problem.

Replace the removable part of the NTE 5 with a filtered ( or splitter ) faceplate. This will give you terminations for an un-filtered pair to take ADSL ( broadband ) to a socket for your router and a separate set of terminations for all your telephones which will not then need micro-filters.

other supplies are available

Thank you for your replies.

I will try and run a temporary wire from the upstairs faceplate to the downstairs socket and see if I get an improvement.

What I don't understand is, even if the router is connected directly to the master socket, via the faceplate, the speed shouldn't drop should it??

Even when the router is plugged into NTE5 speed will be reduced if any internal telephone wiring is connected to the line without a filter. The ADSL signals go down the wiring to telephones and are reflected back arriving at the router like an echo delayed for a few microseconds. The router slows down as a result of the echo.

Putting a single filter at the NTE5 to keep the ADSL signal away from the internal telephone wiring prevents these echos. A micro filter at the telephone end prevents the ADSL signal from being heard as noise in the telephone and slightly reduces the echos but is not the ideal solution. Without doubt the single filter at the NTE5 is the best option.

The new faceplate is different from the old one, it has some rf filters, insdie it.

I have adsl filters installed on both sky boxes, and telephone line. The ADT alarm is also filtered.

I will try running a new test wire tommorow and see if it helps.

If anybody can point me to a thin 2pair external telephone cable, it would be great. I have found one at wickes and b&q, but it is for internal use. What harm would it cause if I used that, apart from the fact its white.

The white cable breaks down outside as its not UV stable.

A quick look on ebay found this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-PAIR-EX...t=UK_Phones_PhoneLeads_RL&hash=item43ae96cc68

Its slightly stiffer than the white internal stuff so holds a straight line on a wall better as well.

thats slightly cheaper than a few websites. I was going to get a roll of 10m.

but before that, I need to check if it is that wire which is causing the speed drop. it might turn out that its something else, like adt alarm or something

Just be aware than many such faceplates don't provide the unfiltered pair on rear terminations - but don't actually state this (you have to read the description and note the absence of any mention of them).

Both the Solwise ones do have these connections.

Why have we got two threads?

I have no idea, I only created one thread and clicked "once" on the mouse.

Oh no you never clicked once......it was TWICE, stop making excuses and admit like a real man........people like you should be put in the virus vaults for two weeks :D :D

I clicked once. Been using PC for well over 18 years, so I know what a click is.lol

I am sure the admins can merge the threads, if they moderate this forum???

All resolved.

I re-wired all the wiring and removed excess wiring.

Now it is Blue to Terminal 5 and Orange to Terminal 2 all around.

Speed stable at 7.4MB.
