hi

What is the maximum depth of a brick outbuilding I can build in my garden without having to instruct a structural engineer or require the need for a steel RSJ? My building regs inspector tells me 8x5m should not be a problem but I'm wondering what the limits are if I wanted to go further.

Thx.

Are you thinking about something like St Pauls? No steel. No engineers.

lol

Its a serious a question. We can build a rectangle outbuilding in the garden 4m deep without steels, like any other large shed or garage. walls at the side all the way up....

You could build a rectangular building deeper (?) than 4m without steel.
Insufficient info.

My sister has an existing garage outbuilding of approx 9m x 5m without an RSJ.

If you have brick walls on all four sides then I'm not sure why C24 grade timbers cannot be used to support the roof?

Yes, you can get joists to span five metres. You can get a lot more than five metres from JJI or Eco joists.
