I wish to open up an offshot kitchen in a Victorian terrace .My plan is to rempve the door and its frame, and widen the opening to about 1200mm,or about 4 foot.I plan to use a lintel spanning 1500mm ie five foot.Would this be feasible please and if not what is the alternative please?

You will be OK as long as there is not some sort of single point load directly above the middle of the opening

We have quite a narrow (750mm) opening from the living room into the kitchen extension. The kitchen wall is painted bare brick so I can see there is a concrete lintel approx 1210mm x 80mm deep. (The opening is in the original external cavity wall with one storey above.) We're thinking it would look better if we widened it by removing half a brick each side. Does it sound like the existing lintel is big enough to do this? I've read that 150mm each side is the minimum bearing but I've seen references to load ratios on inner and outer bricks and different types of concrete so it's sounding complicated. If it's going to be a big job I'll live with it as is but I just wondered if someone could give me a steer on it. Thanks.

If you have a greater lintel end bearing than say 100mm each side after the masonry has been removed, then you should be ok.

You ought to start a new thread.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I meant to start a new thread but I mistakenly posted on one of the ones I had been reading!
