Hi all,

I'm starting to build some cupboard by the landing upstairs. There will be one tall cupboard from the floor measuring 56cm (w) x 202cm (h) and one above it at 56cm (w) x 59cm (h).

I plan to use MDF but wasn't sure if I needed 25mm depth or if 18mm would do? I'm using standard 35mm door casing, but will cut the rebate down to match the depth of the MDF.

I also wasn't sure what type of hinge to get? Given the thickness and that MDF can be prone to splitting when screwing from the sides, I dont want to use a butt hinge. What about these?

At a guess, I was going to go for 3 door hinges on the lower tall door and 2 for the overhead smaller door, using 18mm MDF. Would this be okay?

Cheers

18mm is fine kitchen doors are normally around the 18mm mark,if you use hinges from your 2nd link then make yourself up a jig,and using a hinge cutter and depth stop on your drill jobs a good'n.

MDF isn't the ideal material for your lower door: it could weigh around 20Kg. Cabinet hinges are intended for much lighter loads. If you can't afford blockboard I'd use 4 hinges at least.
