MDF foil coated skirting.. prime or not to prime?

Hello..

sorry if this has been answered already.. i cant find?

I've just put up some new skirting made of MDF with a white papery coating (foil) it says it's finished already but it looks crap an i would like to paint them with white gloss.

do i need to prime and undercoat this before applying the gloss?

right i have tried a test bit without primer and it seems to be ok..

I should have mentioned that it's a PVC foil.
