MDF or Not?

Hi people. I want to make a feature backing for a mirror and want a spray paint finish. Will MDF be OK and what is best to seal it with before painting?
I intend spraying with Plasti-Kote.
Is there something that would be better than MDF, as I am afraid the rounded edges I intend having may not give a smooth enough finish.
 
Minimalist effect wanted and the board would be an irregular shape.
