Hot water system sounded this morning like trying to boil kettle with no water. Turned everything off but pressure at zero and doesn't seem obvious that there is a water inlet valve to re-pressurise to 1 bar. Should there be? Is is that simple? If so how please?

need more info please, do you mean boiler or water cylinder, the only thing to re-pressure on cylinder if unvented would be expansion so i assume it would be boiler, need to know type

Sorry, should have specified - water cylinder pressure showing as zero, and greatly agitated noises had come from this.

the water cylinder pressure will be for the expansion, do you know if you have an expansion vessel or an air gap in the top of the cylinder ?,

There is a big red cylinder sited in the airing cupboard (not directly on top of the cylinder) and there is a pressure relief valve to the rear of the cylinder.

the big red cylinder is the expansion vessel, this is what may need charging, take off the black cap and press a standard car pencil pressure gauge onto it and see how much pressure you have, depending on the size of cylinder will depend on pressure needed, it may say on the vessel if it is low you can re-pressurise with a car or bike pump, don't touch the pressure relief valve as these can jam open,

The big red cylinder will be for the boiler water (radiators, etc). The one for the unvented cylinder (potable water) would be white, but it is a Megaflow so there won't be an external expansion vessel.

good point, sorry missed colour mention, so it will be a bubble top, pressure valve will be used to refill bubble top but these don't have pressure dials on do they

any chance you could attach pictures, are you getting hot water from taps ? and is the pressure still as normal, i.e mains pressure

cba to read all posts. megaflo doesn't use external vessel for exp. red vessels rpiamrily used for htg. would suggest is htg pressure that has been lost.

DO NOT touch the valve on the red vessel.
Make/model of boiler required. It sounds like your heating system needs re-pressurising.
If your not happy/confident doing it I'm not happy/confident advising you how. If you get it wrong it could make a right mess.
