Got them!! :D
Very kind of you, many thanks indeed!
I wonder why, when removing the door handle, the screw has only to be undone a maximum of 5 turns??
Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow, once I've chipped the ice off!

Cheers again
John :D

I suspect you will find out if you turn it 6 turns as it will probably fall out down in the door somewhere never to be seen again.
:D

Update: The lock is now out of the door :D
I had to use unbelievable force on the door button to remove it (says pull outwards  )
The aforementioned screw (undo 5 turns) has to be completely undone, and its more or less captive anyway
I'm cut to ribbons with groping inside the door but thats nowt.
New locks are £120 with an ebay one likely at £65.
Well pleased, and thanks to all for advice and support

Thats great news John.

Obviously the outer lock is faulty?

A million dollar question, that one....
Manually, the lock works fine (no keyhole on any lock) so once in the car
the door can be opened by hand. The plipper opens all of the other doors, its just this one thats dead.
According to the trade, this is fairly typical so I'm taking a gamble with a replacement...even the Merc dealers keep them in stock so that speaks volumes.
I'll bet there are more than 20 wires in the loom going into the door, and with the airbag in attendance I'm not going to start sticking meter probes through cable insulation...there are 6 wires going to this lock alone!
I'll post back when the job is done, gamble or not. I'm perfectly happy to admit if I've got it wrong! :D
Cheers
John :)

i know you probably dont want to do this, but are the locks handed?
could you put it on the passenger door to see if its working correctly.
just an idea.

Thats a bloomin' good post and an idea thats passed me by.....
physically the locks look completely different (although why that should be I don't know) but the electrical connections could be similar.
Getting the door cards off in this temperature is a bit of a risk too, as the plastic poppers tend to fracture.
I've no idea why an electric lock should have 6 wires going to it, either!
Anyway, the new lock should be on its way, so either I'm going to look as if I know what I'm doing, or a complete nugget :p
I feel the dividing line is a thin one!
I'll post back with the result, either way.
John :)

you can buy the trim remover tools, dont think there that expensive, and the popers depending on size, funny enough are probably cheaper getting them from the dealers rather then a factors.

I have a set of trim tools by Machine Mart, and they work to a certain extent - however they bend really easily being necessarily thin.
Anyway, the door card poppers survived although some remained in the door - which is more than could be said for the ones on the tailgate during a wiper motor repair.
Just had a thought about all the lock wires though - I bet a couple of them are controlling the interior courtesy light
John :)

Yes they are, as in the MK4 Golf.

I get those light bulb moments as well.

Just not as frequent as I use to!

Hopefully a final update! :D
The new second hand lock came, went in without any problems and it works! :D
Long may it continue to do so - prising plastic away from door poppers in this temperature has to be risky!
Many thanks to all who have helped.
John :)
