Hello,

Can any of you knowledgeable people let me know why (or why not?) fly leads are required for metal faced sockets with metal backbox? - other than it being obvious good practice.

Thanks!

Provided that the incoming CPC is connected directly to the socket metalwork, and the backbox has at least one fixed threaded lug to secure the faceplate, and the faceplate is secured with metal screws, they are not required.

It is, as you note, good practice to fit them, as it reduces even further the very small risk of the backbox becoming live, esp. when the faceplate is for some reason (eg decoration) not attached to the backbox.

They actually are not. The back box is not an exposed-conductive-part.

Only the faceplate must be earthed.

A surprising number of faceplate screws go rusty, so a fly lead adds an extra measure of protection.

Blup
