Hi all,

First post on here... Our front gate prong doesn't quite meet the latch which is pretty annoying. The trouble is, as you can see from the pictures, the latch and hinges are embedded in concrete and the prong is welded to the gate.

I really don't want to have to start taking the concrete out. Is there a way of extending the prong in a robust way?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Gordon

/removed first incorrect answer

looks like the brick pillars have settled apart.

You could fix a wooden post to the left-hand pillar, and put a new receiver on it.

For example, decking boards are cheap to buy, and about an inch thick (a small piece of wood looks mean) if this would be sufficient. Or a 3" fencepost if not.

for elegance, you could put a matching piece of wood on the other side.

Drill, plug, slope the top edge, use stainless screws, treat with brown fence stain.

p.s.
It might be that children swinging on the gate have bent it out of shape. If you lift it off the hinges and can make it square rather than trapezoid, it may get a bit wider.

Forget any alterations other than on the gate. There must have been a new latch pin welded on at some point as there is no way it can now be the same height as the latch because the the gate hinge rings are way above the bottom of the post hooks....
one can see the paving on the latch side is way higher and holding the gate up so theres been quite a lot of movement going on there?
The gate rings need cutting off and rewelding lower down to pick the gate up , same with an extended latch pin.

Someone's pushed down on the gate by the latch, and bent it; check the distances across each diagonal, and they will be different. Lift the gate off the hinges, and place it current top right corner down on the ground, and with a club hammer, wack it on the current bottom left corner, and try and get it back into a square shape. This should lift the pin back to the right height, and move the pin outwards to (just) catch on the latch.
