We were over a friends at the weekend warming up some infant milk in a plastic bottle when the microwave sparked inside the area where the milk was.
we immediatley turned off the microwave and opened the door, there was a strong burning smell but the milk was only just beginning to warm.
at the rear of the microwave (inside) there is grey plastic plate covering something on the side and this had like a burn mark in it.
any ideas as to what this could have been would be helpful

have you tried using the microwave again?

if it still sparks / doesnt heat, throw it away and get a new one. Unfortunately i am being serious, domestic microwaves cost so little, in comparison to the repair charge its not worth bothering with

Could be something metal inside causing arcing. Check to see if any metal mislaid inside oven.

The grey plastic plate is called the wave guide cover. Its to stop food beeing splashed into magnetron etc.Sparking probably due to food left on wave guide cover-remove cover and try without,if ok just scrape cover clean or replace
