miele s4000 cable rewind problem

Hello
I have a miele s 4000 vacuum cleaner, which has always been brilliant, but recently the cable rewind has become all to vigorous. It won't allow the cable to stay out. As soon as I let go of it, after pulling it out, it immediately goes back in and therefore pulls on the socket.

Is there anything I can do myself, or is it back to Miele?

Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
