Met someone yesterday who had bought a (Ultimate Speed) UMK 10 E4 compressor a few days ago and while checking the second or third tire pressure thought he got a smell and the compressor stopped, he found he had no lights and brought the car (a 2019 Ford Kuga diesel) to a Auto Electrician who found burned wires adjacent to the boot power point he had been using, repairs cost £120. I took the compressor from him to check it out here at home and found that the 10A glass fuse in the hose valve adaptor end was blown, I didn't have a 10A replacement but used a normal one that fitted but (no markings) probably 5A or so, as soon as I switched on the compressor the compressor "flashlight" LED lit up but the fuse blew as soon as I pressed the compressor start button, compressor was unloaded, don't know was this because of the underrated fuse or not so don't know if the compressor had originally developed a fault or had blown the 10A while checking the tire pressure which can happen if you don't push the adaptor fully home on the valve and check that the pressure gauge gives a reading when you press the adaptor lever to open the valve push pin, if no reading the compressor will then be dead headed and might blow the fuse when started.
I have the possible previous model of this compressor, its a UMK 10 C2 that pulls a measured 7.6A when unloaded and almost 15A when compressing to 2.3bar BUT I power it from a old 7.5kWh House Alarm Battery and have never used the power points, I also have a Argos mini compressor for over 16 years which only pulls 4A unloaded and 6/6.5A when compressing to 2.2bar, I have used this from the car(s) power points occasionally but generally now use the UMK as it has a longer hose and is more convenient to use with the battery.
Has anyone had any problems with these UMK compressors?
