Minister say cash in hand immoral

Why the big fuss...

If the tradesman gets some cash in hand my bet if he does not put it in the bank is that it will get spent on food - fuel and alcohol.

If its spent on food then the revenue will get 20% vat from it and more in corporation tax from Tescos. If the rest of it is used to pay Tesco employees then they will get another 20% of that back. either way the Govt will see half of that cash back in its coffers as tax.

if its spent on fuel fags or alcohol then whoopee the govt will see nearly 70% of that cash back in its pocket.

The only way the govt wont see any return from that cash is if its buried underground and then can't be relocated or if its all set on fire.

I will not do any job un-declared. End of. Its not worth the grief if HMRC get into you. They scare me more that er' indoors.

They aren't interested mate. If there's not 20 grand involved they don't want to know. (I do work for three tax inspectors).

Do you ever give them the option of the cash in hand price or the legit one?

That's odd, because their debt recovery department consider £20k to be a cause of major celebration.

And the little guy is their easy target and the one they're after.

No way. Twenty years ago one of them told me it wasn't unusual to find a cheque for a million pounds on the desk.

It costs money chasing the little guy - far more than they could ever hope to recover. It's the bigger fish they are after.

Times have changed.

They target the little guy due to easy pickings. The new systems cross checking various submissions pick up anomalies and the hit squads visit.

More work usually required for the bigger targets due to accountants being involved.

It takes many hours of work to get back nothing. It's about raising revenue.
Neither can a hit squad raid - they have to ask you to explain.

Visit was a generalisation.
However, as a Ltd, they can and do invite themselves.

They do have computing systems you know. Some of them actually work.
So it takes them no man hours to find 'targets'.

As i say, things have moved on in the last twenty years.

If someone declares an income of 10k and banks cash of 30k - then they are a target. If not - if there's no money involved - they aren't interested.

It's never been a crime to make an accounting mistake.

The revenue now penalise for that.
