Missing parts needed for (farm) metal gate

It sounds like you mean you are going to stand your oil drum on the ground and pour concrete into it.

If you wanted to tip such a drum over, attaching a twelve-foot lever to it would probably do the trick.

An actual wall would be far better.
 
If you can calculate the weight of the gate, can you calculate the weight of a barrel of concrete?
How many litres is the barrel? 210?
( Convert the litre figure of barrel).
5 ltrs of just sand is 8kg. Same in concrete about 12kg

Could you potentially bolt and use steel ties inside the barrels to connect TWO barrels together?

If “no digging” are you able to get away with driving a scaff pole or similar into the ground?
A 12:foot gate is a massive lever.
A jockey wheel might help but if the barrel isn’t fixed down you have a potential lever to move it

I guess if it is not heavy enough then that would be another option of adding another barrel

I dont know! and i would not know of any thing that would be strong enough for the gate

What do I use to attach the other end? (please see photo)

0.2 cube of concrete will weigh around 400kg. You could bump this up by filling the barrel with scrap steel and grouting it solid then you'd have a tonne or so at best.

But: anything hanging on the end of the gate will have a 12 to 1 mechanical advantage while the gate itself will be 6 to 1 so with just concrete a child will have it over.

I see 2 options: first a second barrel set a bit away and braced to the first. Trouble is you'd need a second one at an angle for when the gate is open. Best option I think is a fully floating gate: use a conventional hinge at the top to carry the weight of the hinge end and a decent wheel at the other. This doesn't need to castor, just set perpendicular to the gate (a wheel barrow wheel perhaps?) Finally you'd need a hinge at the bottom of the hanging end that allowed telescoping. whil e holding the gate vertical. A scaffold tube through the barrel with a bar inside it would work.

so 400kg/ 12=33kg. or 400kg/6 =66kg


Best option I think is a fully floating gate:

Anyway Jewsons quoted me today; £45+vat for a 800kg bag of ballast and £7.50+vat for a bag of cement. £30 delivery on orders under £200

While Travis Perkins quoted (account holders only) £45+vat for the Ballast, and £6.65+vat for the bags of cement. £20 delivery on orders under £100. They also quoted the same £45+vat for a bag of type 2 hard core (though that would of been cheaper)

Anyone know any where ells cheaper then that? postcrete?

How many bag of cement do you think I will need?
