Modern Home Eggshelling Door Frames

Hi, we live in a modern home which is 5 years old and looking to decorate for the first time. Our door frames have plastic inserts all around the frame on one side. I presuming this may be either decorative or for acoustic reasons. How do you approach decorating with them? Do you take them out and replace them as they are attached using their sticky backing.

Might the plastic insert be intumescent strips? If yes, they are there to provide a fire break seal around the door.
