Mortar mix properties

1 bag cement and 4 bags building sand(from B+Q) will do 72 bricks.
Hi All,
I was on the wrong side of town for B&Q, so I went into Homebase. 1x bag of cement with a hole, and no sand.

Next Travis Perkins, I asked the how much. One chap said 5 and 1 another said 10 and 2. I bought 10 and 2. I think they'll take any I don't use back, or I'll keep it for a rainy day :)

Knowing my stamina, is variable, I'm not as young as I used to be. It's best for me to mix a little, and see how I get on, then if I get the bit between my teeth, keep going. So a mixer will be over complicating things.

Cheers, C.

Hi,
I've been hearing building noises from two doors up, so I knocked and asked if they have a mixer? Yes, it's now mixing my cement:) Now I can mix it properly, and it's perfect, although it was hot yesterday, so it was going off quickly.

Both of the concrete tops were pushed off (kids/drunks), so they weren't stuck on properly. How do I stick them on?
C

10:2 is the same as 5:1
You could try sticking the coping down with a cement and SBR slurry, if you don’t think you can bed them normally.

Hi 2,
I read your ! as 1.

I'm hoping to finish today, and I don't know what SBR is, I have PVA, would that work?

It might do, but why can’t you bed them normally?
Hi 2,
They had both been knocked off, so I think the concrete may not be 'sticky', the're next, so I'll add a bit of PVA, and wait till I see them on the floor again.
C

Just adding pva to the mix won’t work. It’s possible to ‘glue’ them down using sbr/pva neat mix with cement, troweled on in a thin layer. Not really sure if it’s appropriate for your wall though. It’s sometimes done to fix loose paving slabs.

Just use mortar. Wet both surfaces and remove all the dust. Thats worked for thousands of years before PVA or SBR was invented.

Hi,

Job done! I'm ****kered, another technical term.

I used PVA on the Coping, (damped down first, it's sunny) and bedded them down normally.

I used more than 4:1, but it would have been correct if my other neighbour didn't have a bucket, and I didn't waste so much.

Thanks all for your help.
