Does anyone know, is it a requirement to have working hazard lights in order to pass an MOT test?

H'mm tricky one, I wonder if you need brakes? What about tyres? Are they essential too? Damn red tape I'm sick of this country!

thought so.... earlier this year my indicators were playing up, and my garage's solution was to take the fuse out that controlled the hazards....

took it in for an MOT the other week and it passed... (apart from a split gator ??? costing £150 to repair !!!)... but no mention of the hazards !!!

Hazzard lights

Must be fitted to all vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1986, but if fitted, must be Tested.

Get it right folks :D

PS I help build Trikes and other silly things.
Another way would be If it was "Q" Plated. Undetermined year of manufacture.

You have to look carefully at the requirements for the different lights. In some cases, the test requirement is for a particular external light to be fitted only to cars first used after a certain date, but if fitted on an older car it must be still be tested.

In other cases, the inspection is confined to lights which are required to be fitted to the car, and it doesn't matter whether an optional light which is fitted works or not.

Not really. If it is fitted it needs to work.

No, it depends upon the particular light in question.

For example, front fog and spot lights aren't tested at all, nor are reversing lights. Rear fog lamp testing is limited to the mandatory single light required from 1980 onward, so there's no requirement for the left-hand rear fog lamp of a pair to work, or for any rear fog lights on pre-1980 cars to be working if fitted.

looking at the checklist, it says:

"Stop lights, indicators and hazard lights*
are the correct type and colour
do not interfere with each other in operation
driver's tell-tale works with respect to indicators, or there is an audible warning system"

but it doesn't say they should work...!!! A pedant would have a field day with these words?

I think in the snippet you quoted the bit "in operation " might defeat that debate rapidly :D :D :D
