Moved into new flat

Hi there

Looking for some advice. I bought my first flat just before christmas and Im not sure of the state of the plumbing. As it is a reposession, Im unable to talk to the seller to get advice from them as to the status of the system. There have been some moderations made with an addition of an ensuite upstairs and looking at the water tank, there have been some alterations to do.

My question is, is it possible to get a plumber to come out and do a "system diagnosis" as it were, i.e check everything is safe and working the way it should, and if so, how much would this type of service normally cost before additional costs for repairs.

Any advice is much appreciated

If its not broken, then why try and fix it, unless you think there is an issue with safety?. That`s more to do with the boiler than anything else.

If its a gas boiler, then you would be better to get a Gas Safe person to look at it, if you have any doubts.

First thing is to locate your mains water stop cock, and gas shutoff, if there is any problems with leaks, that`s the first place to go.

You may find a plumber who is also Gas Safe, willing to look at the system, but I would imagine they would be concerned if they missed something, and got blamed afterwards!

Thanks for replying. I should have mentioned earlier, Im all electric.

Ive turned off the rising main and there are no issues there that we can see, there was a slight leak around the tap but this has now been resealed.

The main reason I wanted it checked is because of the alterations been made, the water tank in the loft space has been raised to accommodate the addition of a shower in one of the upstairs bedrooms. I dont know how much of these odd jobs have been done and if they have been finished properly. Also the immersion heater hasnt been on for at least 6 months so not sure what state its in and whether anything catostrophic may happen. And finally none of the toilets are flushing and no water seems to be flowing into them, although the bowls do contain some water

I think you meant to say that you turned ON the rising main and their were no leaks.

Its quite possible there are additional isolation valves fitted, which have been turned off, especially on the toilets.

I would not attempt to turn on the immersion heater unless you are 100% sure that there is water in the cylinder.

Unless you are confident in dealing with any outstanding problems, then you would be better asking a plumber to take a look. I would warn them beforehand, that there may be some incomplete work.

Try to get a personal recommendation, or use Check-A-Trade or something similar, to locate someone.

thanks for the offer, managed to get a plumber locally.

Ive actually got a small leak under my bathroom floor now which is going into my neighbours bathroom so its given me something to stay occupied with

You should have specifically selected a plumber who can deal with electrical aspects of an immersion heater.

Some can and some have to call an electrician. I cringe when I hear them saying what I translate to be " I know nothing about electrics and so I have got to charge you more than someone who does so that I can call my electrician mate to help me out".

thanks for the advice. Im hoping this wont happen, its a friend of my Dad's son who is the plumber so Im hoping that we will be able to come to some sort of agreement.
