My Phone answering machine

fellas,
got a bt telephone answering machine, had it for about 3 years.
Not used it for about a year, plugs it in, and all iget is a really bad line, crackling, in fact, it is an unworkable line, any ideas?

could it be the internet interfering with it I dunno just a suggestion our wireless box affects are phone alot crackles etc

Does another phone work in the socket OK? Does moving the line cord around make it crackle? Or the handset cord(if it has one)? Line cords & handset cords are cheap as chips if it's that.

Do you have broadband ?

If so have you put a filter on the answering machine when you plugged it in ?
