I have not met a right handed spread that does not start from the left.

Me included.

Always start at the top and work down.

For right handed the tradtional way is

Float coat from right to left , in order to to tie in the tmaterial at the looser heel of the trowel

and skim coat from left in order to to remove th last trowelmark as you go

That sounds hard.... I wish I could work with a plasterer just to watch and ask questions! I've asked a plasterer if I can work for him for free and I dont mind just mixing up and cleaning he basically said no lol

Thanks John, although I've seen the videos before its helpful to keep watching them. Maybe I was struggling a bit because I was mixing up one batch for the 1st and 2nd coat, in this video he mixes up a new batch for the second coat, that would explain why it went off so quick.

My next question, for the next wall of this room is the gap between the architrave and the adjacent wall is too small to get a trowel in. If I remove all the architrave from the door (inside the room only) will it be easy enough to replace with new stuff? Is this the proper way of doing it or would plasters normally only go up to the architrave? Here's a pic. Ian

Check out "margin" trowels they come in all widths and you can use them for getting in narrow spaces.. That's what most of the "boys" would use I should think, I have a selection of them and can get into most narrow areas and a long flexible 2" trowel which can get down backs of rads if they are not taken off and behind pipes and other obstacles... ;)

Check out "Making good an old window" in my albums There is a picture of one of those long trowels that I used to get behind some pipes. ;) I think it is in picture no 8...

Smashing, just what I need. I didn't want to touch the architrave! Thanks so much... will post photos once done!
