Alternatively, you could rip down a 125mm to exactly what you need.
Something wrong there surely. Are you sure they're not 4x3, or on a sleeper wall?. You'd need something like 6x2 for 2.9m. If what you end up with is too tall just notch the bottom of the ends.
Most modern stuff is nominal (100mm) regularised (planed) hence actually smaller.
what would be the benefit of getting a bigger bit and cutting it down to size myself?
I don't follow that. I they were 3.1m they would be longer than the room. I am replacing existing ones that are 2.9m long, I just need the same again.
I guess 95mm with some 5mm ply cut in strips would work - probably cheaper than getting bits made to order.
If they were 3.1m they would be longer than the room.
need to add 100mm for your bearings onto your span length- 2.9+0.1+0.1= 3.1m
cbde is suggesting that they are going into 100mm pockets in the wall of the room.
Hence 2.9m (width of room) + 0.1m + 0.1m (two pockets in walls) = 3.1m length of wood needed.

Ah, I see. No pockets.
Plan B - my local timber merchant can't do 100mm finish, but can do 97mm as standard, and cust to lengths for me for easier transport (I think I can get 2.9m in my estate ...).
I could just get a bunch of these 3mm ply offcuts

is there a cheaper shim option though?
Just found these https://www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/products/3mm-white-flat-plastic-packer-24x100mm-pack-of-100
although these are not solid, so probably no good
would that be better? Seems a bit crazy to put wood on top of bits of plastic, but I guess this is the modern metric world!
