Need a McClary Warm Air system Main Burner

Although this may seem rather unlikely, I have a perfectly good working McClary warm air system, that was until the Council called in the cowboys!!!

Now I have a (most probably invalid) warning notice and a missing Main Burner. They denign all knowldge of taking the buner and I can't get it retested and working without it....

Help - Any one know where I can get a new / used main burner from?

Why were the Council involved?

If you are a Council tenant then its their responsibility to provide a working system for you.

What does the warning notice say.

AFAIR these units are ancient and I'd be surprised if you had a perfectly good McClary warm air system. The last few I came across had split heat exchangers rendering the unit scrap and lethal.

Perhaps they took the burner to make sure it wasn't re-connected and used.

Regardless of the state of the bolier, which is still under debate, removing the main burner and then denying it and not returing it is dishonest and theft, which ever way you look at it. The main burner is mine. I don't object to them removing it to disable the bolier, but what they should have done is capped off the bolier as removing the burner does not prevent a possible gas escape or a spare being fitted does it?

I am sure if the unit had a split heat exchanger it would not have got a GAS safety certificate would it? (Oh yes and the tenants would have died from carbon-monoxide poisoning, this is an air unit after all). Down stairs from me there are 9 other McClary's in council flats that Enfield council is happy to maintain, it is odd that they are all considered safe, but mine is said to be an obselete health hazard. Double standards or what?

Gasguru has an insight because that is what happens to wau.. The heatex can split at any stage even the same day as cerificate is issued.
No they should not have taken your burner i would say that it is theft.
The arguement about the other units in the block that are still being used that is because if they pass all the tests then they are safe if yours didn`t pass the test then its simple it is not safe to use

I have encountered these situations where the Council will undertake a first visit to heating faults even though the responsibility for its maintenance lies with the owner. I suppose thats to cover the tenant who does not know how to set the controls.

Whilst removing the burner is technically theft, its understandably that they think its reasonably to do that to prevent an unsafe unit being bodge repaired and perhaps being left working while unsafe.

My best advice would be that you replace the heating with a new system and ideally a wet one. You are giving the impression of a Landlord who does not want to spend any money on improving your property.

Must be joking...would never work for council contractors..I've seen the most appalling gas work carried out in council blocks..it's put out to tender so cheapest wins.

I was assuming you were a tenant, and therefore it would not be unreasonable to remove the burner (as well as disconnecting and warning notice etc). However since you are the owner I doubt you are obligated to use the councils contractor. AFAIR the last time I came accross McClary wau's was a long time ago...and the vitreous heat exchangers were more than often split.

You still haven't told us what the warning notice says in regard to the faults.

The other council owned properties are likely to have a very quick safety check each year (perhaps not finding problems), presumerably you are paying the contractor direct and they may be carrying out a more exhaustive check and hence found problems; however they should not have removed the burner.

I very much doubt you will find a replacement burner. McClary has not been available in the UK for many years.

Most people in your situation would have got a quote for a replacement J&S warm air unit. Usually take under a day to fit. You could consider paying for it out of your rental income ?

Whether or not you get your burner back is not really important if the parts needed are no longer available. I would be more concerned about keeping my tenants.
