Need to drill a gas safety vent through a wall

Just had my local Corgi registered Plumber round to do a Gas Safety Check on my flat before i rent it out and they mentioned they could not start the safety check before i have a vent drilled in an exterior wall. Just wondering if this is a job i could tackle myself . If so , is there any legal requirement to the size and type of vent.

The CORGI should have told you what size is needed for your boiler.

For many small domestic boilers its about 50cm². A 100mm diameter core drill will be adequate for most as it can be larger but not smaller.

It has to be covered with a vent with the words a "Gas vent do not cover" on it and NO flyscreen or sliding loovres. Suitable types are sold in Wickes.

The instructions for installing your boiler should give the minimum vent size.

The CORGI could have completed the certificate, noting the deficiency, but should have closed the boiler down with your permission as its unsafe if there is no supply of combustion air!

I thought all the houses in Scotland had solid granite walls 24" thick!

If it is a cavity wall then it should have a sleeve fitted so the the air sucked in comes from the outside instead of the cavity.

DIA why does it really need a sleeve?

Would anybody note it on a CP12 if there was no sleeve ? ( Or even notice?)

Thanks for the reply. They did say that if they started the inspection they would have had to shut down the system . I just won't use it till the vent is fitted and i'll get the inspection done some time next week.

The sleeve is so debris cannot block the through way of air and if the cavity gets insulated then that cant block it either !!
