Hi,

I've been looking for more storage space, and been thinking just now that this metal gas vent takes up quite a lot of space on the loft.

It comes from the boundary wall next door, then follows the roof up to the top to vent.

These are all mid-1990s build houses, which I think had gas heaters in the front rooms originally. I'm presuming that is what it was for.

What would be the rules & regs for me to get rid of it?

Presumably just a case of ripping out and filling the holes?

Cheers.

Well 1st thing would be establish if it's still in use. If it's redundant then it should be just a case of removing and sealing up.

Wouldn't normally be any regs etc covering a redundant flue and it's removal unless there was asbestos involved

Idk, the only evidence on where a gas heater was in our front room is a sealed off gas pipe, and a boarded up hole that seems to just go to a plastic vent straight on the other side of the wall.

Maybe it is from our old gas heater

That will not be from next door your property will have had a pre cast flue which as you say has now been boarded over .

I think I'll have a go out pulling it all out at some point.

Is the section that goes up to the roof vent likely to just come out by undoing the 2 bolts with a socket wrench?

Need to think of something to plug the holes up with after as well. Maybe stuff some fibreglass insulation in the hole left in the wall, and maybe the roof vent to stop wind.

yep flue is just held onto ridge tile by two bolts

Started dismantling the flue, and noticed this white cement filler stuff around the pipe as it enters the wall. Its all crumbled away as I've pulled the pipe away.

Is this asbestos, or just some light cement filler?

nope it will be fire cement . comes in a tub and goes hard in contact with air

Ok thanks, so nothing toxic to worry about then.

I need to figure a way to get the nuts off the roof tile section. The bolt sticks out too much for a standard socket, and can't get a spanner on it.

I managed to actually undo them with fingers in the end. All metal flue venting now removed from loft.

What would be the best method of blocking the hole in wall and roof now? I noticed a dead wasp fall out when I removed the roof vent section, so definitely don't want that open for them to set a nest up in loft.

Plate of some material - thick plastic to avoid rusting for the roof or stainless steel - then use a grab or silicone adhesive to seal. The precast cement section, round plate in the hole then fill with mortar.
