the problem with making stuff voluntary is that profit making businesses always make decisions based on cheapest short term option
we only have to look at water companies - they are happy to pump sewage into rivers because its cheap option

Yes, before Safiq Khan was elected by Londons traffic was minimal and drivers smiled at each other and the only gridlock on London streets was due to two people insisting that the other should go first.
This was discussed on Debate Night last night, it's like a Scottish QT.
A person on the panel put forward a reasonably balanced argument, assuming that is you agree with net zero objectives and further agree renewables is thee way to achieve this.
Her assertion was we're going through a transitional period, a period that will take years if not decades. i.e. the massive and gradual transition from fossil fuels to renewables. During this time she asserted, higher costs are an expected consequence e.g. due to building the renewable infrastructure and so on.
I think that's a more honest stance, rather than listening to politicians who tell us our energy bills will come down. When exactly?

they have improved a bit, but the primary issue is the ability to operate at a higher temperature to power a conventional central heating system.
I've no problem with the cost and already have a multi-room air-con setup, its replacing the boiler that is the issue.

I would also point out that the measures Sadiq Khan put in place were also working towards the targets set by the Conservative govt in their Clean Air Strategy
Yes, the tories were also at the time into green policies but the wind has changed, they encouraged LTN'S due to covid and enourage walking but labour councils pushed it through big time, Sunak at the end of his term did push back on this as well. With green policies the common man sees no benefit.thats not quite as it seems

Yes he did but times have changed as teh common man sees no benefit, having the highest energy cost in Europe makes no sense for industry as it pushes up prices for evryone.
Whatver the debate Net Zero in UK in its current form is finished.
I agree that LTNs and ULEZ are not the answer
I know that ULEZ damaged businesses who work on the cusp of the zone area
the biggest failure in my opinion was the massive error in getting the car industry to move to diesel in the basis it was cleaner
but as I keep on saying: that is not due to net zero
I must admit Im glad I no longer run a joinery business with all that heavy machinery, plenty of them had multiple 25kw motors. in 2017 I was paying £500 a month for electricity. Lighting alone was 4kw /hr
You don't pay carbon taxes. That's something that big emitters do. But it is a way to overcome Jevons Paradox.

How long will it take for Rachel from cleaning to put forward a tax on solar panels ? £100 per kWh panel per annum? Don't laugh, I wouldn't put anything past this lot.
