New banister fitted - seems flimsy

Hi

Just had an old solid board banister replaced with a new one which i believe is in pine with square spindles.

its a straight-up staircase with a right hand turn that goes 2 steps.

The long section up the stairs seems quite flimsy to me and the tops rail bends if some weight is put on it just with my arm. I get the impression that some one could fall through this if carrying something heavy upstairs for example.

I cannot see any evidence of glue being used as it just seems to be nailed together and then screwed into original vertical posts at top and bottom of stairs.

Should the banister feel more solid or is this a symptom of a softwood being used?

Cheers

For structures guarding stairways and landings etc, the Building Regulations
require that they sustain a certain minimum loading, which is detailed in BS 6399. Looking at the figures, I doubt very much that your guarding would comply.
As this is a safety issue, I should have a word with your builder/joiner.
