need a new boiler have had quote but dont know if it is reasonable, also pumber wants to install a potterton performa 30 HE. Does anyone know if this is an ok boiler?

I'm definitely not expert but I've just spent an inordinate amount of time choosing a condensing boiler for a conventional system.

There's comparitively little info around on condensing boilers but the advice I went with was to choose a manufacturer with a big R&D facility and frankly to go with something German because of the reliability and multi-year warranty. This effectively means Vaillant or Worcester-Bosch.

I would happily have had a Vaillant Ecomax Pro 28E but these are difficult to obtain currently so I'm going for a Worcester 24 Ri. It's costing me £750 inc VAT plus another £60 or so for the flue. Fitting is bundled with a lot of other work but potentially it's 2 days work at up to £250 a day.

However depending on your installation you may have any number of other components or work required to run a condensing boiler and to comply with new regs.

One trick I discovered was that some suppliers will just recommend what ever boiler is on special offer and/or with the best mark-up. There are a lot of deals going on condensing boilers at the moment tied in with green schemes etc.

You will no doubt get lots more advice which will be equally valid and perhaps contradictory to mine. It's a jungle out there... Just my tuppence worth though!

Regards,

Robert

First question should be size of house, number of bathrooms etc, plus occupancy.

Will it be a new system or an upgrade.

Alpha HE Boilers all have a 3 year warrantee which is worth considering, whereas the Potterton is 12 months

thanks guys really appriciate advice might get some more quotes from other plumbers who install other boilers. Will definitaely mention the manufacturers you have suggested. I am completely relocating my boiler from the kitchen to the loft think this is making job more expensive as have to have gas pipe installed into loft etc.

Potty 30 is NOT a combi - beware those trying to sell you one, like "Vaillant Ecomax Pro 28E but these are difficult to obtain currently so I'm going for a Worcester 24 Ri."

I saw an Ariston condenser wiuth a 5 year Gtee but ... that might have been a combi!

sorry Chris Potty performa 30 IS A COMBI :P

Something with a number 30 at the end of it would suggest the boiler is rated at 30,000 BTU. Smallest combi is always 80,000 btu upwards. At 30,000 HW delivery would be p155 poor.
