New Boiler needed for the sake of 2 rubber seals?!

Hi everyone
I have a pretty older boiler Ideal Mexico Slim line CF55 (last made in 1988)

Heating packed up Sunday , so I called out British Gas who told me I needed a Gas Valve part number V4600A1023U.

Honeywell make the part (well the one that BG came around with) but they don’t make or supply 2 small rubber seals needed to fit the part. They say that the boiler manufacturer should supply these.

So we called then and they do have these on the schematics, but they have no part number to order against.

So BG has told me that they can’t do anything and I need a new boiler. I found the engineer to be honest and on the level and he tried a lot of things to resolve the issue

I accept that my boiler is maybe due for replacement, but I can’t believe that the part replacement has been stopped for the sake of 2 small rubber seals.

Any advice on where I could go next with this?

What shape seals? Just 'O' rings ???

BG talking a load of rubbish again.

Usually the existing seals are ok to use again. Just need testing once all re-assembled.

Failing that, I always take the seal or 'o'ring to a local seals specialist.

They always match the seal or 'o'ring for a fraction of the cost of buying one from a boiler parts stockist.

BG said it was against HSE for them to use the exisiting seals!

There is a potential risk with using the exisiting seals, and should never be done.

I can understand your frustrations with BGs lack of effort, Its hardly looking after your world. Sometimes the people in the call centre arent the best people to talk to about very specific items.

I'd give BG a call back and tell them if they cant do anything, you've spoken to independant heating engineers who have assured you its fixable and would like BG to foot the bill. It might not get you very far, but its better than forking out 1700-3500quid for a new boiler.

I thought he was doing the best he could, but I also get the feeling that the BG processes are structure to ensure the “new boiler” solution is arrived at as quickly as possible.
 
I would hazard a guess that upper management would love to get a boiler in everyone of their customers homes.

The the engineer in your house probably has a very different view.

Sorry that BG have come to that conclusion.
 
I got that impression, he told me he went to a call before me and had to charge someboday £99 to replace some batteries (the cost per fix under the Homecare package they were on)

He didn't really give me the impresson he was happy doing stuff like that.

If he can't re-use the 'o' rings, surely he established with the boiler manufacturer what the rings were made of? Metric & imperial 'o' rings of all sizes are readilly available, but the material used to make them may differ?? C'mon, it's not rocket science........ :rolleyes:

As long as the new assembly is tested for any possible gas leaks, then passes these tests, then there is nothing wrong with the existing seals.
 
perhaps he tried this, from what the op says, the S&R guy would rather fix than price for a new boiler.
 
The Apollo rocket booster which exploded on take off was due to a failed 'O' ring seal !
 
So British Gas can't fix one of the most common boilers
you'll find. When all they have to do is replace a gas valve.

It's laughable.

Give BG the push.

I would have been around there new O rings or a bit of
gasket paste. Job done and away.
