hey...this reminds me of my old system...i bet it sounds like a steam engine when it come on
with the rad valve just try it one way...if it still gets hot turn it the other way...simple....although if you're draining the system i think you need to make sure all rads are open.
as for the wiring mine worked exactly like yours...and even though i'm pretty good with electrics (okay i know its illegal...but i consider myself competent)... i couldn't manage to get the central heating to work independant of the hot water...the wiring is quite fiddly...but you should be able to get schematic diagrams for the timer if you search hard enough on google. i think you migth have to change the 2/1 valve to a 3 port valve to get central heating withough hot water.
