Looking for a new New Desktop. Any recommendations.

Tempted to get an apple but would rather pay less if I can get as good a quality

17" laptop offers more flexibility. I use mine on my lap whilst watching the TV footy ;)

I don't know about budget. The main things are good quality big screen that will last a while

Problem I've had in the past is they last 3 years then get really sluggish

i moved to an apple device 2 years ago, got fed up with windows and changing laptops every 3-5years , my wifes airbook is from 2012 and still going well, she just closes the lid and opens and away she works.
Numbers & Pages comes with Apple and equivalent to word/excel and can work an out aswell
otherwise you will need to buy the Office products - now called Microsoft 365 for the subscription, which I pay £59 a year for 2 devices and get updated to the latest version, wife uses outlook
Expensive though
but great quality screen
And unlike my lenovo windows 10 machine (same cpu and more memory) - 3 years old, does not keep updating and the apple is nothing like as slow, i use the lenovo at least once week, as i do help other people and so need windows 10 to see whats going on.

Also quite a few friends and family have changed and i dont think anyone has complained rather the opposite

The desktop machine is quite expensive , i would not recommend the cheapest version, need to look again to see if they have changed this year, but that was my old advice
Great quality screen for porn

The operating system is updated each year, and usually they works on the machines for a few years 6-7 , But I saw an announcement that apple are moving away from intel chips again

Buy the screen separately.

An i3 or AMD Ryzen CPU with 4 or 8GB of RAM will see you out. I'd want an SSD but they rinse you for those so I'd add one in post purchase.

I have Mac book air. Still pretty good after 6 years plus. Hence why I would pay a little more for an apple

I have 11yr old Windows7 Compaq laptop that works perfectly and an even older Windows 7 desktop that I built from spare parts. Both are perfect for what I need which is pretty much the same as you.
I also have an ipad air which I seldom use because I find it much slower than the others.

I know nothing about PCs so take my advice with a pinch of salt. Desktop I'm using now is an Acer Aspire - 2nd one in 13 years. Only replaced the first one because I wanted higher spec. Anyway had current Acer 8 years, recently my PC had been getting sluggish and Windows 7 was corrupted - things like Windows updates wouldn't load properly when Windows was still doing them for 7. Microsoft Office stopped working and it wouldn't communicate with the printer properly (some unfixable Print Spooler problem???).

Got a knowlgeable friend to put in a solid state drive and change to Windows 10. The acer was a good base, but even at 8 years old with a few tweaks it now works better than new and it's lightening fast. The SSD was worth every penny of the £80 I paid for it. So this is both a recommendation for Acer desktops and poss upgrading a pc that is slow and/or corrupted but otherwise good.

As for screen, had my LG Flatron 13 years and apart from the seperate power supply unit which needed replacing 2 years ago, it works good as new.

Maybe I've been lucky, but my pc gets lots of use - especially on the seedier side of the net. (y)

imac macbook or nothing although ipad pro’s are up there.

If you seriously want to view pix, take the HDD out of your existing one, put it in your new one as drive E/F etc... so you keep all your files, put a small SSD in the old one and use the old one for viewing and the new one for everything else.

That way, if you get attacked by nefarious web pages, it's easier to sort out.

I believe chromebooks are supposed to be good. My daughters getting one for school.
