I bought a new house in November and had a major roof leak a couple of weeks ago. The water came through the side of the soil stack to the kitchen ceiling. The roof has now been repaired but I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for drying out the ceiling? Heaters etc.

The roofer also found a redundant flue which is very likely asbestos. Should I have seen some mention of this on a homebuyers survey? Thanks

Depends on the type of ceiling really. Is it plasterboard or lath and plaster? If plasterboard, has it deformed in any way (bowed or buckled)?

All of the damage and redecoration could have been handled under your buildings insurance rather than you having to deal with it separately and at your own expense, which it sounds like you did.

This is the leak. The ceiling was replaced a couple of weeks before as that area was damaged. At the time I didn't realise why! There is no damage to the bathroom and the kitchen is being replaced so I didn't see a point in making a claim. The roof I assume would be my responsbility as wear and tear although I think the surveyor should have probably spotted something. Would a dehummidifier help with the drying out?
